30 contact gates at the new terminal of Kuwait International Airport

May 2010 – Jan 2012

Project description

The expansion of Kuwait International Airport entails the construction of a new terminal and several other infrastructure works. The symmetrical terminal features 30 contact gates. 21 of these gates are flexible stands which can either accommodate two narrow-body aircraft or one wide-body aircraft. All 21 gates are capable of handling the Airbus 380 to give maximum flexibility. Initially, only 8 gates will be fully equipped with systems for the A380 aircraft.

While working at Deerns, I was responsible for the apron layouts of the new stands. The flexible gates demand for flexible apron solutions, designed for a big fleetmix on multiple lead-in lines. To create a clean-apron solution, the apron systems would be placed in pits in the platform surface, with connections to the gatehouses. The complete routing under the platform has been coordinated and the pit locations optimized for the expected fleetmix.

The project has been on hold for a while, but is now being built. The new terminal is not yet in use.
