Redevelopment of concourse D aprons at Schiphol Airport

Apr 2015 – Dec 2017

Project description
Six aprons with in total ten passenger boarding bridges and building connections

To be able to handle the ‘Wide-body’ peak and ‘Narrow-body’ peak, the current and future flight planning of Schiphol demands more flexibility in the use of the apron space around the building.

In the old design, some of the gates at the North side of the D-pier had multiple lead-in lines. Due to this design, some accidents and near-misses have happened at these aprons in history.
While working at Deerns, our team came up with several solutions, including a solution where no double lead-in lines were required. Based on the increased safety in the new situation, the airport was happy to go further with this solution.
Another study of the aprons entailed the possibility of parking bigger aircraft at some of the aprons.

Besides the new apron design including the new installations, my task in this project was to translate the new design into drawings for the bridge manufacturer (CIMC-TianDa) and the civil contractor, as well as taking care of the communication with the Chinese engineers.
